I created 101 Badass Superhero Affirmations to help women see themselves differently not simply as women surviving difficult circumstances, but as the superheroes of their own lives.

101 Badass Superhero Affirmations began as a book, but it grew into an empowerment experience that includes affirmations, journaling, audio, guided visualization, affirmation cards, bundles, and merchandise designed to remind Black women of the power they already carry.
Why I Created 101 Badass Superhero Affirmations
This project is deeply personal to me. It grew from some of the darkest moments of my own life and from my journey toward finding strength again after the loss of my son, Asante.
I wanted to create something that didn't simply tell Black women to “stay positive.” I wanted something stronger that acknowledged that life can be painful and complicated while still reminding us that courage, bravery, strength, imagination, and resilience can exist alongside that pain.
That's where the idea of the Badass Superhero came from: not a woman who never struggles, but a woman who continues discovering what she's capable of.

I've spent years writing powerful Black women into science fiction, fantasy, and superhero stories. But 101 Badass Superhero Affirmations turns that idea toward the woman holding the book.
The superhero isn't somebody else. It's you.
101 Badass Superhero Affirmations isn't part of one of my fictional storyworlds. It's a real-world empowerment experience inspired by the same themes of courage, power, resilience, and Black womanhood that run through my fiction.
Being a badass superhero doesn't mean being invulnerable. It means learning to recognize and use your power even when life gets difficult.

From Affirmations to Superhero Gear
The Badass Superhero idea eventually moved beyond books. I created merchandise inspired by the same themes of courage, strength, empowerment, representation, and seeing yourself as the hero of your own life.

Behind the Scenes
Creating 101 Badass Superhero Affirmations was also an exercise in figuring out how the physical experience should look and feel. I tested multiple versions before arriving at the final design and format, and my family became part of that creative process.
